Dude. I was watching the 1991 version of Phantom on youtube (not Yeston and Kopit and not ALW, but a third musical). It was close-ish to Leroux, and the Persian kept making me laugh. It was hilarious b/c he was talking to Buquet and Buquet asked him what he did at the opera.
Persian: I am ensuring against disasters-- natural... and otherwise.
Buquet: Oh! So you are the insurance man!
It made me laugh. And then the journey to Erik with Raoul was hilarious ("Pick a rope to pull, Vicomte." "This one?" "Well, what's wrong with the other one?") and his interaction with Erik made me grin. It was so anticlimatic and funny.
Maybe I only think so 'cuz it's late.
