In the 2004 film's prologue - and all the black and white sequences after that - do you guys think the old woman is Meg or Madame Giry? I go back and fourth on it.
If it's Madame Giry, she's aged incredibly well. Too well. This makes me think it's Meg. If it's Meg, why is she still called "Madame Giry"? That would lead us to assume she never married, since she still had the same last name. But of course we could make up other reasons for this, such as that she got married to Erik and chose not to take his last name for privacy reasons or something.
What do you guys think? (This could also have gone in the hypothetical questions thread, I suppose, since there really isn't a correct answer, unless somebody official actually specified it and I never heard about it.)

For me I personally I believe it is Meg. In my stories I like to make it so that they mistake Meg for her mother and call her "Madame Giry" not realizing its her daughter.

If you do the math you'd think it would have to be Meg, but the script says that it's Madame Giry. And plus, why would Raoul be so affected by seeing Meg? Sure, it's his wife's best friend, but Madame Giry is the one who took him down to the lair. Raoul has a bigger connection with Madame Giry than Meg.
I honestly cant decide.

I think it's Meg, and she took the title of Madame (I being the Erik/Meg fan that I am) when she married Erik, since he has no last name they kept "Giry" if it IS Meg's mother, then DANG, she took her vitamins!!

Would Meg have aged that much and also why would she go back to the Opera House? I thought when Meg grew up she moved on with her life somewhere else, but really I don't know how old MmeGiry is because they really had problems with people's ages in this movie.

Haha, I thought you guys would find this amusing. Yahoo! has a feature called Yahoo! Answers where you can post questions or answer other peoples' questions - they have every topic imaginable. I searched for POTO-related questions and found somebody asking if it was Meg or Madame Giry at the auction, so I answered...and mine was picked as the best answer! ( Click here in case you're curious.) I just thought it was funny timing, since we were just talking about this here.

This was the first time one of mine was, it was a nice surprise. And it's not even the first time I've answered a question about who the old people at the auction are, hahaha.

Quite good actually...You didn't give a definitive answer but everyone gets to say their answer is right unless they say it's neither Mme Giry or Meg
