Well, it's definitely extremely different, but it was inspired by POTO, and it does include a deformed man hiding out in a theatre, becomming infatuated/obsessed with a young singer, and doing everything in his power to make her a star. So, as bizare as it is, I'd still consider it a POTO film.

I've heard that Phantom of the Paradise really has nothing to do with Phantom of the Opera and Leroux's name isn't even mentioned (I checked that by the way) so I don't think it should be included on the list just my opinion ..someone I know saw it thinking Phantom and said it was absolutely dreadful.. but only in that mindset... I haven't seen Phantom of Paradise but from a review that I read and some quotes as well, I wholeheartedly think that from that it isn't the worst version out there, of course I'm not really saying that this one is a "miracle version" either. In other words, there has been *much* worst, I believe. Just my option there. ^^ And after all... the '04 movie mentioned GL's name like... what, this small on the main poster and thisquick in the credits? ;-)

The Phantom of the Paradise was one of the most bizare movies I've ever seen. I can't say I really enjoyed it--just not my kind of movie--but I'd still definitely consider it a POTO movie, and I'd recommend seeing it, just for the sake of seeing another version of POTO.

I agree completely to that- to me it seems to be a definitely weird movie and too so not that truthful to the book or any other Phantom version (and that hockey-helmet-mask thing is completely eye-popping to say the least), but it's still based on Phantom, and it still has it’s nice things, from what I understand. And that quote that I read from it was very nice… so I think that the movie deserves a bit of credit at least. Too, (and I don't really want to start ranting con-movie things since knowing myself, I can so easily get carried-away) I believe that if some of the not-so-loved and not-so-popular Phantom versions would actually be compared to a popular one, the 2004 movie, to be explicit, it's not really just much of a difference in faithfulness to its original base, it's just that some of the phans love the content of one more than the other, in my option (...for if both were compared to each other, the unfaithfulness to the original version would be the same amount or so). Just wanted to say that and also, sorry for the random off-topic-ness. ^_^

I agree completely. I mean, I'm a die-hard ALW stage phan, but I would never call it a faithful adaptation of the novel, and therefore I don't put down other versions for not being so. I would call it slightly more faithful than the 2004 movie simply based on the dates and the historical accuracy of the costumes, but that's about it.
One thing that does bother me where being true to the novel is concerned is the fact that the Robert Englund version is titled "Gaston Leroux's Phantom of the Opera". Now, I enjoyed this version for the most part and I can deal with the changes in the plot, but how on earth could they call it "Gaston Leroux's"? I don't recall any time-travelling in the novel...or Erik skinning his victims...
And don't worry about off-topic-ness. I enjoy off-topic-ness, and I'm glad there's at least some conversation going on at all. ^_^

Well I got the paperback novel of the Leroux version and it does have phantom of the paradise in there as a poto film ,but I like seeing movies that more closely resemble the book or at least have Leroux's name in there although the Claude Raines barely resembles the novel I still enjoyed it even though they changed Christine's last name
