These are the versions I've seen/read:
1) Gaston Leroux novel 2) ALW musical stage show 3) ALW musical film (2004) 4) Lon Chaney silent film (1925) 5) Charles Dance miniseries (1990) 6) Robert Englund film (1989) 7) Dario Argento film (1998) 8) William Finley film (The Phantom of the Paradise, 1974)
And I'm going to add the Susan Kay novel to that list soon. ^_^

No, I only listed the versions I've seen or read. I've heard of every version, but I haven't seen/read them all. The eight I listed in my post are just the ones I've seen/read, not the ones I've heard of. There are a ton more than that.

I've heard it was excellent. ^-^ If I ever see it somewhere I'll pick it up for sure. Our Walmart has the Robert Englund version, but I absolutely refuse to even consider watching it.

Really? Is that because it's technically a slasher film? It's really not too bad. I mean, yes, there is gore, and the plot is pretty odd, but Englund makes a good Erik, and the score is pretty. And there are two Megs! How could you not like a movie with two Megs? I would love to see the Claude Raines version, it's next on my list. I love movies from that era.

Well i've refused to watch any movies that I think absolutely stray from the original novel..so I only watched the silent, the claude raines and the movie stage adaptation..I hope to see the stage show someday before I die no matter who is in it

I could be mistaken, having never actually seen the Claude Raines version, but judging by what I've read about it, I don't think it's much closer to the novel than the Robert Englund version. (The Englund version might actually be closer.) And the 2004 musical film is so far from the novel it's not even funny. I'm not trying to push you into watching it; if you don't want to, don't. I'm just pointing out those things...

well I'm not into really watching the nighmare on elmish street version (read that in a movie review) well i guess the musical movie was more geared toward the musical but at least it has some things from the novel and follows generally the same storyline

I've only seen a little bit of the Robert Englund film, but what I saw was kind of creepy- not too gory or anything, though.
The other versions I've seen/read:
1. The 2004 film 2. The original novel by Gaston Leroux 3. The Susan Kay novel
At the end of the month, I'll be adding the stage version ;D.

I've heard that Phantom of the Paradise really has nothing to do with Phantom of the Opera and Leroux's name isn't even mentioned (I checked that by the way) so I don't think it should be included on the list just my opinion ..someone I know saw it thinking Phantom and said it was absolutely dreadful.. but only in that mindset...
