This could really go in "Phanfiction" but I noticed we dont have a Kay!Phantom thread anyway.
So lately I've been thinking about phanphics. Not stories written on fanfiction.net and such but ones that are actually published. Susan Kay's novel is a phanphic if you think about it. It's just so widely accepted that people dont question it. I've been questioning myself on why I accept it the way I do. Is it because it's been around since before the 2004 movie? Because it's written so well? Because other people accept it?
Do you refer to it as just a phanphic? Do you value it as much as Leroux's? What are your general views?

I pretty much hate it because she
***SPOILER***
made Christine sleep with Erik THE DAY BEFORE SHE WAS MARRYING Raoul!! And then she DIES after giving birth to the Phantom's baby so poor Raoul is stuck with the dumb kid, I forget if he realizes it's his or not. But it's just another horrible Raoul-Basher, and I don't recall Meg in it...much at least. I think she was mentioned.

I haven't read it in a while but I don't like the fact she slept with Erik and had his love child ...I didn't remember she died after having Erik's baby..also the fact she looked just like Erik's mother...I recall someone mentioning that...creepy

I STILL haven't read this but I really want to, if just so I can take part in conversations about it more. I've read quite a bit about it, but that's not really enough to make a good opinion on it.

I really like Phantom. Kay did a wonderful job with the history of Persia. I actually took to researching 1800's Persia after reading the novel and....
__ SPOILERS!!!! __
Mirza Taqui Khan was really Prime Minister/Grand Vazier of Persia at the time. Also known as Amir Kabir, he was assassinated in the same fashion described in the novel.
The shah at the time was very young (he took the throne at 16) and was very much under his mother's influence.

In fact, I think the whole book, unto the section which was already portrayed by Leroux was very good; perhaps even acceptable as canon. However, I have trouble accepting what Kay wrote about EC and RC; I mean, y'all know I'm an EM and RC fan all the way. Still, the story Kay wrote cannot be discounted as your average phanphic. The command of language, the research-intensive background, and the believabilty (for the most part) if far above most phanphic writers one ecounters on mainstream sites. Which is why Kay is published and those who write phics like "Roaul is a fop!!!1!!!211! Go ERIK!~!!@!!!" are not.
