Andrew Lloyd Webber announced on his blog today that he is considering bringing the ghastly POTO sequel, Phantom of Manhattan to the stage. I am scared. For those of you who don't know about PoM, here are some things to read: 1, 2, 3

OMG."I am now 99.9% certain that I'm going to do the sequel to The Phantom of the Opera. It's taken me ten years to decided to do this, and I want to base it on the ideas I had with Freddy Forsythe- he is a go for something called The Phantom of Manhattan." - Andrew Lloyd Webber, in his video blog

I weep for my phandom.
Lord Andy, what are you thinking? What are you doing? Do you really have absolutely no idea what your phans think, or even how much this will completely screw up the story?

I am srry you guys, but I have to disagree. I would luv to see what Andrew Lloyd Webber's clever mind would come up with. Don't try to deny that you once secretly hoped for POTO 2. I personly do not want to see Christine get a second chance with the Phantom, but then again we don't have to do the what if's anymore. Maybe Meg will have a bigger role this time? If you disagree then thats fine. We are all entitled to our own opinions.

I know where you're coming from, phantomluver4ever1, but are you familiar with Phantom of Manhattan? I have not been able to actually read the book myself - I have yet to come across it in any store - but I've heard plenty about it and it's like really bad fanfiction. And from what I've heard, Meg barely has any role at all. In fact, I believe I read someplace that she has become a maid. A maid? A MAID? I just disagree with a sequel altogether. I mean, it's fun to daydream about what could happen - E/M or otherwise - and to write fanfiction and stuff, but I don't want any actual addition to the story or musical. The most meaningful point in the entire musical is when Erik realizes that Christine can never be his because she will never love him and be happy with him, and so he lets her go for her sake, instead of keeping her for his own. A sequel in which he's going after her again just ruins the entire end of the story. The author also says that Buquet killed himself and Erik did not mean to kill Piangi, just to silence him - so basically, Forsyth has just gone the way of a silly phangirl and turned Erik into a fluffy teddy bear who has just had everyone in the world against him for no reason. ERIK IS A KILLER, YA'LL. He's not normal! It's an important part of the story! The author also has absolutely no respect for Leroux, even going so far as to say that Leroux's version of the story was "wrong" and ALW "corrected" the "errors". Um, how could the author be WRONG about his own story? A friend of mine posted Forsyth's forward here, if anyone's interested. And, just as you said, this is entirely my opinion and you're welcome to disagree. Sorry about how long and forceful this post is. I'm not yelling at you, phantomluver4ever1, so PLEASE don't take it that way. Phantom of Manhattan just bothers me in so many ways, and I find myself venting a lot when I talk about it.

I found a summary review of the book.
The Phantom of the Opera escapes to the U.S. and becomes a ruthless multimillionaire, still masked and obsessed with the singer Christine. Then a letter from Paris changes his life. What happens next is told from various perspectives, each of which advances the plot. It's a shame none of the ensemble of actors gets credit because they all do a marvelous job. The soft-voiced phantom, the snobby columnist, the evil Darius-each adds color to the story while painting a vivid portrait of early twentieth-century New York. The dialogue on human nature between the priest and God hits the heights dramatically. Lots of celebrities like Teddy Roosevelt and Irving Berlin appear.
Sounds...like bad fanfic to me...I dunno, that's my opinion. I honestly wouldn't want a Phantom sequel, he said it would be a play, with some music, which I'm at least thankful it's not a musical. I'd have to hurt him then...
I wouldn't see it period, it's fun to write, but...it's weird if you ask me.

After reading that plot..that is exactly the reason we have fanfic...we can make the story the way we want it and everybody wants something different at least the original story has some merit to it...the so-called "sequel" sounds positively awful

Maybe Andrew Lloyd Webber is just a closeted fanfic writer. Somebody should explain the wonders of fanfiction.net to him.

Me too. This is just my opinion but, a sequel would mess up the entire storyline. We're not supposed to know what happens, your imagination should decide. That's the whole point, you don't know what happens once Erik leaves. I don't know about all of you, but I'm just a little bit sick of Christine. I really cant stand hearing about her anymore. I agree with PG110, Erik realizes that he has to let her go to save her. So why does Sir ALW want Erik to go after her again? I sure as hell don't. I say if Webber needs something to do, he should leave POTO alone and work on something new. I don't know...that's just me.

I'm fairly certain people are planning letter campaigns to Lord Andy, to at least try to convince him that it's a bad idea...as soon as anything is set up, I'll post links, in case ya'll wanna participate.
Off-topic, I have to say it's so nice that we're all having actual conversation on this board for once! If only threads here could usually be this active!

I say we all get together and write a screenplay. An E/M screenplay.
